The mind, the body and the soul are inseparable. Each has its own needs if it is to remain healthy. When you remove the obstacles preventing those needs from being met, Healing Happens.
Carol Ritberger, Ph.D.
Since 1981, I have been helping people understand the hidden contributors behind stress, life crises and illness from the perspective of personality typology, behavioral medicine and medical intuition. During that time, I've seen changes in the role medicine plays in the healing process. I've seen a change in how illness is diagnosed and treated, and I've seen a new model of illness and healing emerge. It's a psychospiritual model that sees:
- Illness, as being a psychospiritual crisis involving the mind, the body, and the soul, rather than being the result of external factors such as viruses, bacterial infections and environmental contaminants.
- Diagnosis, as holistically oriented, rather than pathology oriented. The diagnostic process is now taking into consideration hidden contributors such as personality, thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and beliefs. It's looking at the direct connection between how the mental state affects the physical state.
- Treatment, as being about illness prevention, rather than being crisis intervention treating symptoms and relieving pain and discomfort. Instead, people are being educated on what they can do to improve their health, reverse the aging process, manage stress, and eliminate chronic illnesses.
- Healing and curing as not being the same. Neither in approach nor in outcome. Curing seeks to fix the body and restore it back to where it was before it became ill. Healing seeks to make it better than it was before it became ill by removing the obstacles preventing the mind, the body, and the soul from creating good health.
- Good health, as being a process rather than being a result. A process involving living a lifestyle conducive to good health, making healthy choices, engaging in healthy relationships, and doing something each day to give the soul what it needs, which is to grow personally and evolve spiritually.
